Commercial Performance
Pricing and Commercial Performance: Build a System, Not a One-Time Price Increase
A management framework for segmentation, price architecture, discount governance, sales execution and revenue-quality measurement.
Start with price architecture
List prices, bands, discounts, surcharges, contracts, rebates and exceptions should form a coherent structure. If commercial terms evolved deal by deal, the first task is to make the architecture visible.
Segment willingness to pay and cost to serve
Customer value, urgency, alternatives, service level, order profile and cost to serve can justify different commercial models. A single blanket increase often ignores these differences.
Govern exceptions
Define approval thresholds, deal economics and required rationale for discounts and non-standard terms. Visibility into exceptions is often as important as the headline price.
Equip the sales organization
Commercial change fails when sellers receive a spreadsheet but no customer logic, negotiation guidance, target corridors or escalation process.
Measure revenue quality
Track realized price, mix, discount leakage, renewal/retention, margin and customer behavior together. Revenue growth without quality can conceal deterioration.
