M&A Integration
Post-Merger Integration: The First 100 Days Are an Operating-System Problem
A structured framework for integration governance, Day 1 continuity, synergies, organization, systems and workstream control.
Separate Day 1 from integration
Day 1 is about continuity, authority and control. Integration is the longer process of combining capabilities, systems, organizations, customers, suppliers and economics. Mixing the two creates avoidable execution risk.
Build the integration thesis
Translate the deal rationale into a small number of integration priorities. Different theses—cost synergy, growth, capability acquisition, geographic expansion or consolidation—require different integration choices.
Create workstreams with dependencies
Finance, HR, technology, commercial, operations, supply chain, legal and communications rarely move independently. Build a dependency map and identify decisions that gate multiple workstreams.
Protect the business while changing it
Integration must preserve customer service, critical operations, key talent, supplier continuity and cash control while new structures are introduced.
Track synergy as a governed portfolio
Define each synergy with an owner, baseline, calculation rule, milestone, dependency and realization evidence. This keeps aspiration separate from verified value capture.
